GokartArenan Norrköping Best drivers

GokartArenan Norrköping is a wonderful track that crosses itself using a bridge. The moment when gokart switches from driving on this bridge to diving from it towards the hairpin turn feels like a little rollercoaster. And it gets even more exciting, when the surface is wet. This time it was moist after the rain, and group 1 of participants went out to set their best lap times. It wasn’t that easy. For some of them these conditions were totally new. Best lap times in this group spread between 53,8 and 60,1 seconds. And it was Robert Ulmanski who made the best out of this situation. In this stage our Championship was using weight balance for the first time, which should have gave a chance to heavy drivers. But despite of extra 15 kg Robert found the best spots for breaking and the best lines for turning. In group 2 the only driver without extra weight was Anatoly Hramov, and he was the one who showed the best time in the whole qualification. He was half a second faster than Robert, but also almost 2 seconds (!) faster than the second best in his group Cezary Blawat. This is the first pole position for Anatoly since November 2014.

Semi-final group 1 gathered every second driver according to qualification standings. Robert Ulmanski and Cezary Blawat pulled away from everybody else. Igor Scavlev let two racers pass him, but after one of them made mistake and spun in the corner, Igor could get one position back. On the next lap Igor spun as well, but, luckily for him, could continue racing without losing a position. But he could already forget about catching Mariusz Rozanski, who showed a perfect drive and could gain 2 places. He almost caught Karlis Ligeris, who lost position to Martin Brzezinka. There was a good battle between them on the last lap, but Martin could hold it to the finish line. He finished 3rd, but, due to some misunderstanding with gokarts’ numbers, his lap times haven’t been recorded. Championship Organizers would like to apologize for this fail. In the back of the line Ireneusz Siewert switched position with Tomas Jancauskas.

Drivers in group 2 had many position changings during the session. Martin Krus took over Grzegorz Swiatkowski right away for the 2nd. Started 5th Kamil Siewert drove over the slippery curb and spun. He let two racers through, but Andreas Oldeskog drove right into him. In the next turn Kamil spun again, and this time Andreas could make it clean. Viktor Gars couldn’t hold his P4 and let Adam Mietus through, who in total gained 4 places during this session. Viktor then had an interesting but clear battle with Antons Gulans and was able to save his P5. Anatoly Hramov, who was leading the pack, overlapped Tomasz Jablonski. On the final lap Anatoly made a mistake and spun. The gap to Martin Krus was big enough for him to return the first. But Martin was very close now, which created a little intrigue. Because the big one was just about to come…

Final B was probably the harshest session we have ever had. There were a lot of bumping and crashing. The surface at some spots was already dry, and racers started to take advantage from it. But not all of them could remember that there were still moist spots, especially on the curbs. Kamil Siewert tried to overtake other racers by driving on the curb inside the corner on the higher speed. That moves were always followed by the crash with opponent in the front. For this type of moves track marshals were waving yellow flags towards the guilty drivers. But they didn’t give any penalty for that after all, letting Championship Organizers do it after the race. And it was decided to disqualify Kamil from the race protocol after he collected three warnings during this session.

Another driver who has received disqualification as penalty was Championship rookie Piotr Dargiewicz. In one corner he made gokart racing look like gokart bowling by heavily bumping, pushing off the track and spinning other participants. GoKart PRIX Championship Organizers would like to deliver a clear message, that even though hobby gokarts have a safety barrier around them, they were not made for deliberate bumping and crashing. These types of incidents actually damage track owners’ property as well as our Championship’s reputation. Here you may find information about this stage’s incidents and penalties with comments from Organizers.

Tomas Jancauskas fought his way through the field and by the end of the day could gain 5 positions! But it was the race to forget for Andreas Oldeskog. He had good speed but was involved in a few incidents and ended up only 14th. In the front there were three racers who haven’t had a chance to fight during this session, and they finished exactly as they started: Rozanski – Scavlev – Gulans. Interesting part about it was that the best lap time showed by Mariusz in this session was 2,03 seconds better than Igor’s who finished 2nd.

Starting position in both finals were determined by semifinals as well as qualification results, where two drivers who finished their semifinals on the same position were compared by their position in qualification standings. Anatoly Hramov had an undoubtable lead and started on pole. In the end of the starting grid Mariusz Rozanski was getting ready to race, after he received a free pass to Final A by winning Final B. And the green light was on! Racers went clean into the first turn, but Grzegorz already let Martin B. through. Then Karlis passed Mr. Swiatkowski as well. Then was Adam. And even Mariusz, who was already two spots up. Karlis and Mariusz together took over Martin B. And their next victim was Martin Krus, who let them pass as well. They were just unstoppable. By this time Cezary Blawat was able to pass Robert Ulmanski for the 2nd, and then Karlis used Robert’s mistake for gaining another position.

Three racers in the front showed what racing is all about. Hramov – Blawat – Ligeris were battling each other for the lead. Cezary entered under the bridge as 3rd, but left this part of two-corner section already 1st! He was able to trick others by crossing the lines. Unbelievable driving by Mr. Blawat! In the next corner Karlis passed Anatoly using the outer line. And the next person behind last season’s runner-up was Mariusz! He was definitely one of the few stars of this stage. He made it through Anatoly, and so was Mr. Krus. Black streak went on for Mr. Hramov, as he lost another position to Mr. Ulmanski and became 6th. But not for long. He could put himself back together, and took his spot from Robert right away. Then an incident happened in the front between Martin K. and Mariusz which, unfortunately for Mariusz, left him with a spin and also left us without any clear evidence about the contact. As a result of it Mr. Rozanski lost 3 positions in his almost perfect race. This also let Anatoly to get back to Mr. Krus and overtake him.

And then was the last lap. Cezary Blawat was clean from Karlises attacks and took his first-ever GoKart PRIX victory. Karlis Ligeris gained 7 positions and finished 2nd. And here came the main intrigue. Martin Krus exited the last corner better than Anatoly and was reaching him very fast on the finish straight. They both literally crossed the finish line together. Photo-finished showed that Martin was a few centimeters earlier on that line. But, apparently, time tracker line is located around 30 cm before the visible start-finish line. And there only by 0,03 seconds first of them was Anatoly. So he got the final podium spot. Marius Rozanski finished only 7th, but could set the best lap time of the race, which gave him an additional point in the Championship standings. Viktor Gars was able to use battle between Adam Mietus and Grzegorz Swiatkowski to finish 8th.

It was a great race on a great track. It was full of ups and downs, emotions and great battles (except Final B, unfortunately). We would like to see more this kind of action races. And you as a driver can make it possible! It was only stage 2 of planned 11. And everything still might change in the leaderboard. Our next race will take place at Gävle Motorstadion Rörberg on the 7th of May. See you there!
