The annual Challenge CUP continued in Nyköping. This time we had 4 previous winners and 2 potential new CC owners. One of them, Tommie, started the challenge with the fastest lap time in Heat 1. In Heat 2 he was only 2nd fastest, but that still kept him on top of the leaderboard. It was Daniel who won Heat 2 with Berke being 3rd. After the first part of 3 Daniel and Igor were following Tommie.
Next two heats were driven in the opposite direction. Berke was the fastest in Heat 3 and Mattias in Heat 4. In fact they together with Igor were the only ones in top 3. Even Tommie was behind. That changed the leaderboard drastically – the reigning Challenge CUP owner was in the lead. Igor was only by 0,05 seconds short of P1. Tommie was 3rd, followed by Mattias. By the way, there were 4 different winners in 4 Heats! Amazing density!
Only 2 heats left with the 2nd best lap time that is counted. In Heat 5 Tommie’s and Daniel’s times were identical! 3rd was Mattias and 4th – Berke. That dropped Igor to P4 and put Tommie back into the lead. The last heat was a decider. Igor showed 2nd best lap time. 2015’s champion and Challenge CUP owner Karlis finally got into the top 3. But the best of them all was… Tommie! He couldn’t cope with the reverse direction in Heat 3 and 4, but was able to recover very well in the last heat and won his first Challenge CUP! Congrats to Tommie! Berke ended up 2nd with a total time of 0,26 seconds behind Tommie. But Mattias became 3rd with only 0,007 seconds behind Berke! But that really didn’t matter, because there’s only one winner that counts.
Overall this year the total time was better than last year, but the gap between the first and the last was the closest ever – 2,377 seconds. Big thanks to Johan at Caroli Kart Center Nyköping for support in organizing this event as well as to all this year’s participants! Challenge CUP is over and we are back to racing! Already tomorrow in Järfälla will take place stage 2. Let’s race!
