Our annual Birthday Race and the greatest race of the season had a very interesting start as more than a half of a peloton were participating in it for the first time. Some of them have never driven on this track before. The Qualification session was quite short and the experience of this track was a crucial moment. It seemed that Lucas already had this experience since he got his first TQ by showing the best lap time. Mattias was 2nd, and Berke 3rd.
Green lights! Lucas was leading the race up to the first corner where he got passed by Mattias. Then Mikas took 4th from Giorgio and Niclas took 7th from Igor. Lucas was holding Berke, so the Turk overtook him at some point. Michaёl dropped back a couple of positions. Igor gained some. There was much going on in the peloton. Only Mattias was feeling calm since he created a nice comfortable gap to 2nd place. Before the end of the 1st segment Mikas overtook Berke for P2.
Start of the 2nd segment. Berke and Mikas are fighting for the 2nd, letting Mattias get away again. Berke takes the spot. In the middle of the pack Michaёl sends Niclas into a spin. Stewards don’t penalize him due to the fact that Niclas left the space and then shot the door when Frenchman’s nose was already there. Later on the same lap an incident between Igor and Lucas ends up with Lucas appearing backwards on the grass losing all the spots. Stewards’ decision was controversial – no penalty for Igor. According to a majority of stewards’ votes he had a right to be there on the apex and Lucas also shot the door with consequences like Niclas just a moments earlier. Igor, by the way, also lost 4 positions. These 2 incidents helped Rasmus gain many spots and even catch Giorgio and Berke. Berke wasn’t happy about that 🙂 . Niclas wasn’t happy either when a couple of laps later Rasmus sent him off-track, but he received a penalty of 3 positions for that move. Giorgio closed the top 3 behind Mattias and Mikas at the end of segment 2.
The final chapter of the race of the year! Michaёl on P5. Scott on P6 in front of Niclas and Igor. But Niclas without a big fight gains 2 spots. Right in front of him Berke is pressing Giorgio for the 3rd, but fails. Suddenly Niclas is already fighting Berke. But they decide working together to get to Giorgio. Didn’t really work out. They finished as they were running the last 7 laps. Behind them Michaёl was switching the lines and got himself into Rasmus that lead to a spin of the Frenchman. No penalty was issued. Michaёl was frustrated. Mikas… couldn’t get close enough to Mattias. No one could get close to Mattias. He was in his own league winning the Birthday Race for the 4th time in a row! Amazing achievement!
All that Mattias has left to do is to win some points over Berke and not to lose some points from Igor in order to clinch the title already in Norrtälje!
