In March we visited a new indoor track in the Södertälje area. This is the largest indoor track in Sweden, and we were excited to do our race there. Race setup consisted of Qualification session and a long race. Two GoKart PRIX champions covered the top 2 rows after Qualification. The fastest was Niklas E followed by Mattias N and championship rookie Patrik.
The pole sitter started well while Mattias N let Patrik through. It looked like a done-deal for Niklas, but already on lap 2 he felt something wrong with the kart. He started losing pace, but still tried to defend his position. Mattias N shouldn’t be asked twice. He overtook Niklas E for the lead quite soon. Suddenly behind them appeared Filip who passed Igor and Patrik at the same time after their collision. Behind them a bit earlier was another collision when Berke tried to pass Adele. Filip took advantage there as well together with Niclas J. Next lap there was another collision between Igor and Patrik due to a fight between Niklas E and Filip. That led to Igor and Patrik losing 4 spots each. Race continued and there were many laps left to go.
Filips’ great breakthrough collapsed with his ambitious overtaking move where he ended up facing the barrier and letting everybody by. Adele was fighting for 3rd. Berke and Niclas J – for 6th. Igor used their fight to his advantage. Mattias N was also using the advantage of clean air and was just building the gap in the lead. Niklas E let Lucas through and was defending his last podium position as hard as he could. This created a “train” behind him with an overtaking opportunity for everyone “riding that train”. Igor passed Adele, Berke passed Adele, Berke passed Igor and Adele passed them both. Niklas E lost 3rd place to Patrik. Igor took back his position from Berke. There was 1,5 lap left when Niklas E’s kart finally gave up and broke with smoke from the engine. He let several karts through and went to the pits to retire. Mattias N was very far away in the front and won the race. Next three spots were covered by GoKart PRIX rookies – Lucas, Patrik and Adele. For Lucas it was a great race because he gained 8 positions! Adele took home 2 extra points for setting the best lap time. Michael finished last, but he pointed that he saw a finish flag 1 lap earlier than everybody else. After investigation and confirming this fact, the race direction decided to remove the last lap and make the previous lap as official finish. This decision moved Niklas E from DNF to P8!
